| RUBY MARCH 2008
Body/Chiropractic Work
We like to do Body and Chiropractic Work on all our horses. Wes and Carolyn Maillard visit us about once a week to work on one of the rescues, plus me and another one of my horses.
The first time I saw a session, I was amazed. The horse seems to know exactly what Wes and Carolyn are there for... and actually participate in the treatment by "telling" them where to work, how they want you to do it, and for how long. My one mare, Stormy, gets mad at Wes for talking too much and not focusing on her and the work she wants/needs. She looks back at him like "hey man, stop gabbing and get busy!" It is hilarious.
It is very cool to see, not only the physical changes (improved posture, movement, less pain, quicker healing, etc), but the changes in their demeanor and attitude as well. Zoe and Ruby made huge changes in this area in just one session. Their eye got softer, their faces showed more expression, and they just looked happier and more at ease over all.

After about 5 weeks of letting Ruby settle in to her new Foster Home, we decided to bring Levi over as a new pal. We hoped she might pal up with Bessie, the sheep, or Chief, the goat, but seeing she desperately wanted another horse buddy, we gave up that thought and brought Levi over from my place. She is a million times happier and seems to be more relaxed each day.
As you can see in the pics, she is gaining weight and muscle mass and soon we will begin doing some basic groundwork on a steady basis to get her ready to ride.

Ruby is a different horse these days... she is calm, happy, and beautiful. Her foster home folks love her beyond belief and she seems to glow from good health and a happy spirit. She has filled out to a good weight and her attitude and personality have bloomed in the past months. We continue to work with her on the ground and Lisa is doing a great job learning how to be a leader and friend in the process. She is confident playing a lot of the Parelli ground work stuff ie. the circle game, squeeze game, driving game, and the porcupine game, and still needs work on desensitization, but over all is looking fantastic.
Just this past week, she escaped and went on a little adventure through out our neighborhood. Lisa and Simon (Lisa's son) tried to chase her down on foot, but finally, it was Ruby who decided it was time to come home and walked up to Simon in a neighbors front yard. Lisa and I drank about 5 glasses of wine after that one!
This little escapade helped me realize that Ruby is ready to step up the training a bit and now we will get her moving on to more challenging tasks on the ground with obstacles and walks (on lead) around the neighborhood. We will keep the fridge stocked!
